ANOTHER GAME ANOTHER WIN
Yes I know it's the Nats and Fish but hey, 5-1 is 5-1.
What was impressive about Brian Bannister other than his two hits today was this was the second time in a week he faced the Nats. In the game last week I guess a combination of nerves and Billy Wagner did him and the Mets in but today Bannister was a solid thinking man's pitcher.
I have no problem with Willie Randolph using Billy Wagner in the 9th inning of a 7-1 game. Wagner missed time the last week or two of spring training with the finger injury and he has said he is behind in his throwing. The descenters will say he pitched Sunday and by throwing 31 pitches today he spent for tomorrow. Well, Heilman only threw 14 pitches and El Torro, Dauner Sanchez, is ready and able for tomorrow plus who said Wagner can't go in the 9th if need be tomorrow? Mike Francessa? Since when does he make policy around here. By the way Mike and Mad Dog have become unlistenable as Russo said Bannister' performance today "was no big deal" Thank God for iTunes.
How about the way Jose Reyes has gone about his at bats so far the early season? Would the pocket protector crowd that killed Reyes last year like to acknowledge this?
I have gotten on Willie Randolph about some of his moves and non moves but the fact remains he is a huge presence in that clubhouse. His clubhouse. Marty Noble has a story about Randolph and Cliff Floyd and how he has gotten Floyd not only heavily motivated but has his teammates looking at him as a leader. Remember under the late Art Howe, Floyd hated playing here as the Mets clubhouse under Howe was a dungeon. You have to give Willie credit where it's due.
