I'LL TAKE USELESS OUTFIELDERS FOR $500,000 ALEX Here's what I don't get about this Endy Chavez signing, wouldn't it have made better sense to just keep Eric Valent on the roster as the 25th man than Chavez? As a bench player, Chavez is not the type of player I would want up in the late innings as he has no power and is a free swinger who strikes out a lot. Sure he's a very good outfielder but who is he going to spell in the outfield? Floyd? Certainly not Beltran. Maybe the two headed RF'ers Nady/Diaz? At least Valent has some power and could give you an extra base hit in the late innings all I see Chavez doing really is pinch running. Forget about him playing in the outfield if one of the regulars goes down because if one does go on the DL and Lastings Milledge is not called up the scene at Shea will look worse than a NYC Transit worker picket line. Then I read this in this ornings NY Times that just makes no sense at all: {The Mets will probably keep six players on the bench, and Jose Valentin, Chris Woodward, Ramon Castro and Julio Franco seem to be the only locks. Chavez should compete with Victor Diaz and Tike Redman, among others, for backup spots in the outfield. } http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/24/sports/baseball/24baseball.html Why should Victor Diaz have to fight for a roster spot with the likes of Tike Redman and Endy Chavez? If anything it's between Chavez and Redman to be the 25th man until Milledge is ready to come up then one of them will say adios! Shows you how slow the Mets news is, I'm worrying about the 25th man on the roster. To all the readers of this site and to all who send me great e-mails and comments I want to wish you the happiest and healthiest of holidays.
