DO TELL ABOUT DOTEL I have to say all this Bill Wagner talk has got me a bit queasy. Yes he is a top closer and he would be a top acquisition by Omar by it looks like it may take 3yrs/$30mil to have him move up the turnpike and that seems quite steep for a 34 year old hard throwing closer whose arm could blow out at any time. He did bounce back very nicely this year after arm trouble in 2004 but during the 2006 season he will turn 36 and thats seems like too big a commitment to me to make to Wagner. Now the story that makes the most sense is bringing back Octavio Dotel. Dotel is on the mend from ligament surgery on his right elbow but it seems Dotel is on the mend and a nice healthy incentive laden contract could be the big coup. How about going after Brian Fuentes, an arbitration eligible lefty reliever from the Rockies? Fuentes saved 31 games for the Rockettes in 34 chances. In 74 innings Fuentes struck out 91 and walked 34 and he is 30 years old. Fuentes made a whopping $328K last season and should be up for a nice raise but it wont be anywhere near $10 mil. Kelly Wunsch is a lefty who was released by the Dodgers who could be a fantastic LOOGY for the Mets. His K/BB ratio is nothing to write home about, 23.2 ip 20h 22K 14 BB overall but against left handed batters Wunsch went .190/.311/.270 a classic LOOGY. This is the way Omar and the Mets brain trust should be going and looking to use the money they have for a big bat in the middle of the lineup. While Im at it, what would be better giving Rafel Furcal a 4yr/$36 mil contract or signing Rich Aurilia (Born and raised in Brooklyn) or even an incentive laden contract offer to Nomar Garciaparra to play 2nd base as Jeff Keppinger and Anderson Hernadez fight it out in spring to get the back up job? The money you save could be put to better use buying out Kazuo Matsui and sending him on his way. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/story/361835p-308206c.html (TO POST A COMMENT CLICK ON THE TIME OF THIS POSTING) < |
