ALL YOU GOT TO DO IS PICK UP THE TELEPHONE AND DIAL ME....... From the first three paragraphs of Paul Hagen's story in today Philly Inquirer: {THE PHILLIES had a 4 o'clock phone call scheduled with Billy Wagner's agent, Bean Stringfellow. At that time, they had planned to increase their offer to the free-agent closer. Oops. Forty minutes before general manager Pat Gillick was supposed to pick up the phone, assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. got a call from Stringfellow. "He said that, pending the outcome of a physical, Billy was going to sign with the Mets," Gillick said late yesterday afternoon.} If your Pat Gillick you can posture all you want about the length of the contract the Mets gave Billy Wagner and how he was willing to go high in the cash department but not more than three years and all that but you can't tell me he didn't tear up his office when BeanStalk called him and said Billy's a Met. You don't just loose your closer but you lose him to a rival is a kick in the balls. I guess now I'll be receiving post cards again from the Phillies ticket department about buying ticket packages when the Mets are at the Vault. http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/baseball/13280881.htm?source=rss&channel=philly_baseball (TO POST A COMMENT PLEASE CLICK ON THE TIME OF THIS POSTING) < |
