"HEY DUKE, CHEESESTEAKS ARE OVERRATED"
A report today out of Philadelphia names The (Lame) Duke as one of the candidates to take over for the woefully inept Ed Wade who was canned by the Phightin' Phills on Tuesday.
The (Lame) Duke is not the only one with a Mets pedigrie up for the job but former Astros GM Garry Hunsicker has been looked at as well. From the looks of things CEO Dave Montgomery is looking for a "baseball guy" but Phil Sheridan seems to think he should be looking for a "slide rule guy":
[The reported names sound right. Gerry Hunsicker did an excellent job with the Houston Astros before fatigue with owner Drayton McLane led him to resign. Assistant GMs like Atlanta's Frank Wren and the Mets' Jim Duquette should be interviewed. If the Yankees' Brian Cashman becomes available as expected, Montgomery should bring him in, too.
It would be encouraging if Montgomery beat the bushes to find some less obvious talent. South Jersey native Jeff Kingston, the San Diego Padres' director of baseball operations, is an up-and-comer in the mold of Boston's Theo Epstein. Not only is St. Louis vice president of baseball development Jeff Luhnow well-versed in the statistical analysis of players, but he's a Penn guy. Just like Montgomery.]
