Quote from Steve Phillips from Adam Rubins Mets Notebook in the NY Daily News 3/18/03
Were going to be all right with our pitching. Im not really overly concerned about it. I guess it would be nice for somebody to make it easy on us. But we think they can all get big league hitters out
WTF? Is he nuts! This pitching staff has not been good this spring and the injury to Pedro Astacio has exposed the lack of depth in the back of the rotation. Lets look at what we have in the rotation:
Lets say Astcio misses two starts. That would leave Jason Middlebrook, Mike Bascik, Jeo Seo and David Cone to fill the last two spots in the rotation. Why do I have a distinct feeling that The Mules arm problems will be constant this season? Arron Heilman and Pat Strange have been sent to minor league camp for re assignment I think Strange will get the call up after about 3 or 4 starts. He might have made the staff out of spring if not for the surgery he had prior to reporting to St Luice. Heilmann will not be rushed but hopefully he will show consistency in Norfolk and be ready when called. It will be interesting to see if Cone will come north with the team and fit into the 4 spot for a couple or three starts hile The Mule recovers. The 5 spot is not a great concern right now, due to days off in the first four weeks of the season.
But even a full strength, its not a very impressive staff. Age will be its downfall.
The Bullpen will be the strength; I just hope Howe and Rhule dont burn them out. Lets look at the pen:
Middlebrook, Bacsik, Seo, or Cone (2 of this group will start other 2 will be in the pen, my guess? Seo and Cone in the rotation Middlebrook and Bacsik in the relief)
If the starter can keep a lead thru 6 innings Mets have can hold the fort with this pen. But I just think these guys will be over worked this season
