So it's 19 degrees today and snow is on the way for tomorrow so why am I so H-A-P-P-Y? I just took a look at next weeks TV Guide and there it was Sunday March 2 @ 1:00 PM CH 11 Mets v. Baltimore Orioles! My first look at the Men of Howe. YIPEEE. I can't wait to see Tysen Beckford......er I mean Mo Vaughn at his fighting weight. Oh I do hope that the diva Robbie Alomar can make the game even though his contract has not been extended. And the" Say Hey Kid" Roger Cedeno in CF let the fun begin.
It will be good to see the boys all rested and relaxed under Art Howe. Last year it was rough with all the drugs, and in fighting, guys not getting along and that was just in the stands. Armando will be there and I bet he gets the save in this game beacuse what the hell it's March isn't it.
Gee do I sound cynical? Nah. See I look at this team like a cup of Starbucks coffee. The coffee is way over priced, I mean I pay over 4 bucks for a latte. If you go to Dunkin Donuts that same 4 bucks will get you a huge 24oz coffee and a couple of donuts. And the help at the Starbucks are not hard working blue collar counter people like they are in Dunkin Donuts no they are "baristas" well excuse me. Just like the Mets. I watch this team last year with a 110 mil payroll and saw whinners, malcontents, guys who just did not care. Keith Hernadez was dead on in his commentary about this club quitting. It did. And there were casulties from last season. Not to belabor the point that has been belabor all off season but as much as I like Bobby Valentine, he had to go. It was not all his fault last season. He tried to be too many things to too many people. His work with the widows and children was heroic. But, his time was streched way too thin. You can't run a major league baseball team and be a companion to widows and children and run two restaurants and take care of your own families needs.
It also does not help when the players see that the GM Steve "Clinton" Phillips has no regard for you and when you know that you can go to the GM with petty complaints and know he will side with you. Bobby Valentine is not a good man he is a great man and one of the great baseball minds around. Sure he has flaws, he always has to be right and at times makes you think he created the game of baseball, but when he went head to head with the two darlings of the media Dusty Baker and Tony La Russa in the 2000 NL playoffs he showed them "Who's their Daddy".
I am not very optimistic about the Mets chances this year but I hope I'm wrong. After I get a glimpse of them Sunday I'll hope to have a brighter view. I hope the MEts are more Dunkin Donuts than Starbucks
By the way. A dark day here in NYC the great Gil Hodges was denied entrance to the Hall of Fame. Shame Shame Shame.
